Dilatation Tape

Dilatation Tape

Dilatation tape is a special material used in waterproofing systems that prevents water leaks by absorbing the stresses caused by the expansion and contraction movements of structures. It is generally used at the joints of two different materials or building elements, at dilatation joints. These tapes have high elasticity and tear resistance and are resistant to different weather conditions and chemicals. It is critical for extending the life of structures and increasing the effectiveness of waterproofing.

TPE Based Dilatation Tape

Thermoplastic elastomer based, UV resistant dilatation tape used for sealing and insulation of wall and floor joints and all kinds of expansion joints.

Advantages

  • It is resistant to temperature changes and remains flexible in cold temperatures down to -30°C.
  • UV resistant.
  • It has high mechanical and tear resistance.
  • Suitable for use under soil thanks to its resistance to plant roots.
  • Dryfix Dfr 2000 TIX epoxy repair mortar should be used to bond the dilatation tape.
  • Resistant to dilute acids and alkaline solutions.

Areas of Use

  • Foundation and curtain concrete, building dilatations
  • Tunnels and similar underground structures
  • At ridge junctions,
  • Building joints and cracks,
  • Terrace, balcony, furnishings,
  • Wet room, parapet on the walls,
  • Ponds, waste water units
  • Multi-storey parking and parking areas

Surface Preparation

The application surface should be cleaned from dust, paint, dirt, detergent, etc. and should be clean, dry, smooth and solid. Any areas requiring repair on the application surface must be repaired beforehand. Dilatation tape must be applied on the deck concrete. If screed or any coating is applied on the deck concrete, it must be cut and trimmed up to the deck concrete.

Application

Dilatation tape adhesive is thoroughly absorbed into the application surface, then the dilatation tape is laid. It is pressed so that the adhesive comes out of the holes of the dilatation tape. Then apply adhesive on the perforated part of the dilatation tape and pinch the tape between two adhesives. The application is made with a thickness of 1.0-1.5 mm and at least 20 mm overhanging the tape. Dryfix Dilatation Tape should be applied with Dryfix Dfr 2000 TIX epoxy repair mortar inward or outward omega shape (Ω).

Before horizontal tape application, polyethylene roving with a diameter of 1 cm more than the dilatation width should be laid in the dilatation gap in areas with high movement and filled with sealant. In vertical areas, it is applied with the same adhesive method without using polyethylene roving and sealant.

What is a Dilatation Band?

Dilatation tape is a flexible material used to prevent expansion, contraction or cracking between different parts of buildings. It is especially applied to dilatation joints in areas exposed to water such as foundations, walls, roofs and terraces. Thanks to its waterproof feature, this tape strengthens the waterproofing of structures and prevents moisture from seeping into the structure. At the same time, it is resistant to structural movements, which ensures long-lasting protection.

Dilatation tape offers both a practical and economical solution in waterproofing projects. It is easy to install and works in harmony with various building materials. It prevents damage caused by expansion and contraction due to temperature changes, especially in reinforced concrete structures. In addition to waterproofing, it also contributes to sound and heat insulation. The use of dilatation tape significantly reduces maintenance costs while extending the life of structures. Therefore, it is considered an indispensable material in modern construction projects.

How to Apply Dilatation Tape?

The correct application of dilatation tape extends the life of the structure and maximizes the effectiveness of the waterproofing. So, how is this application done?

First, the surface on which the dilatation tape will be applied must be clean, dry and smooth. Substances such as dust, oil and mud should be removed from the surface and cracks, if any, should be repaired. Then, a primer is applied to the area where the tape will adhere. The primer ensures better adhesion of the tape to the surface and helps waterproofing to be more effective. After the primer dries, the dilatation tape is adhered to the surface. The width and thickness of the tape should be selected according to the needs of the structure and should be suitable for the joint spacing.

In the final stage, the edges of the dilatation tape are fixed with special adhesives or waterproofing materials. This prevents the tape from shifting and ensures waterproofing. An additional waterproofing layer can also be applied over the tape to increase the level of protection. The application of dilatation tape should be carried out by professional teams because water leaks and structural problems may occur if the correct techniques are not used. When these steps are followed carefully, structures become long-lasting and water-resistant.
