Frequently Asked Questions About Floor Paint

What paint is used for floors?

Floors are painted with polyurethane or epoxy resin-based paints that have high abrasion resistance suitable for foot and vehicle traffic.

The suitable paint must have these features;

– UV resistance,
– Elasticity with stretch capability,
– Waterproof,
– Hydrophobic to prevent water absorption,
– Tensile and adhesion strength greater than 2.00 N/mm².

How many m2 does 5 kg floor paint cover?

5 kg of floor paint covers 12-13 m² in two coats. Consumption per square meter is 350-400 gr/m².
For waterproofing applications 5 kg floor paint covers approximately 5 – 6 m² with a consumption of 750 – 1000 gr/m².

How many m2 does 18 kg floor paint cover?

18 kg of floor paint covers 45-50 m² in two coats. Consumption per square meter is 350-400 gr/m².
For waterproofing applications 18 kg floor paint covers approximately 18 – 24 m² with a consumption of 750 – 1000 gr/m².

Is it water resistant?

Floor paint is water resistant. Water resistance tests have proven that it is as waterproof as a waterproofing material. Thanks to particle adhesion, it prevents water penetration and creates a barrier that stops water from reaching underneath the surface. For waterproofing applications, it is applied in three coats with a consumption of 750 gr/m² to achieve maximum water resistance.

What is the difference from road marking paint?

Road marking paint is an alkyd resin-based paint. Floor paint is a single-component, solvent-based polyurethane resin paint. This difference results in advantages and disadvantages in usage. For example, alkyd resins have low yellowing resistance, are hard and brittle, so they can only be used in small areas like line marking. Due to their high filler content, they are dense and their consumption is about 1 kg/m².
Compared to this, floor paints have lower density allowing higher coverage with thinner layers. Due to their elasticity, they can be applied over large areas. They can also be used as waterproofing materials. These are the main differences.

What thinner is used?

Because the paint resin is dissolved with a solvent called xylene, it can be thinned with readily available cellulosic thinner. For an 18 kg package, 0.5 liters (half a liter) of cellulosic thinner can be used for thinning.

Can thinner be added to floor paint?

When applying in open areas with high temperatures, the solvent in the product evaporates faster than in closed and room temperature environments, so cellulosic thinner can be added for thinning. For an 18 kg package, 0.5 liters (half a liter), for a 5 kg package, 0.15 liters (150 grams) of cellulosic thinner can be used.

What are the paint prices?

Prices vary depending on package weight and requested color options. Colors like yellow, red, and orange are relatively more expensive due to pigment differences compared to colors like white, gray, and black. Floor paint prices range between 2,610 TL and 5,355 TL.

How many hours to dry?

Floor paint’s initial touch dry time is 1 hour, and it fully dries in 2 hours to form a healthy film. After 2 hours wait, you can apply the second coat. After the last coat, wait another 2 hours before opening to foot traffic.

How long after application can it be used?

After applying two coats, it can be opened to foot traffic in 2 hours, and to vehicle and forklift traffic after 7 days.
Not rushing and respecting the maximum waiting times will improve the quality and durability of the paint film.

Is primer required before application?

Under normal conditions, primer is not required. However, if the floor has old paint residues or dust that reduce adhesion, Dryfix DFP 800 Solvent-based Epoxy Primer should be used. If the concrete to be painted is weak, crumbly, and subject to heavy vehicle traffic, Dryfix DFC 100 Solvent-free Epoxy Primer should be applied.

Is topcoat application necessary?

If there is no demand for tire marks prevention, easier cleaning, or extra gloss, topcoat application is not necessary.
For areas like auto repair shops and inspection centers with intensive vehicle traffic and high abrasion risk, one or two coats of Dryfix Betolac Concrete Topcoat can be applied after the paint to protect against tire and wheel marks.

Is it scratch and impact resistant?

Floor paint is impact resistant except against sharp metal objects.
It can be used for a long time in areas with foot and vehicle traffic. The presence of rubber wheels on all items moved on the surface increases impact resistance. Using DFC 100 coating primer also makes the paint application more durable.

What is the durability period?

Depending on usage conditions, it is 2 years under normal usage.
Highly used areas will wear faster locally compared to other areas. You can repair these regions with the same paint to extend the overall service life.

How is it applied?

1. Clean the surface before application.
2. If there are old paint residues or surface hardeners, perform sanding with a sanding machine.
3. Repair any cracks with Dryfix Dfr 2000 epoxy putty.
4. Thin with cellulosic thinner according to usage area and air temperature.
5. Select and apply primer depending on surface condition.
6. Double coat application is recommended.
7. Observe traffic opening times.

What tools are used for application?

It is recommended to apply with synthetic epoxy rollers. For faster progress and higher daily coverage, airless spray machines and paint compressors can also be used.

Is it suitable for indoor use?

It is suitable for indoor use. Due to being solvent-based, odors may occur during application. It is recommended to ventilate indoor spaces during and after application.

Is it suitable for outdoor use?

It is suitable for outdoor use. It contains a resin resistant to UV rays, making it safe for outdoor use. Suitable for foot and vehicle traffic.

Which seasons or weather conditions are best for painting?

It can be applied in all seasons except rainy and snowy weather. In hot weather, faster solvent evaporation can shorten drying times, which may cause roller or brush marks; this risk can be balanced by adding the recommended amount of thinner. In cold weather, drying times may be extended.
Make sure the surface is dry as moisture weakens adhesion and may cause bubbles when temperature rises. Moisture control should be considered along with weather conditions.

How long does the odor last after application?

Depending on ventilation, the odor typically disappears within 1-2 hours.

Does the color fade after application?

Dryfix Traffic Paint is UV resistant. The color does not fade. An annual color change of about 20% is considered normal.

How is it cleaned and maintained?

After painting, normal cleaning and maintenance can be done. We recommend using plenty of water and foam-based cleaning products as strong detergents and chemicals can accelerate paint wear.

Does it have anti-slip properties?

It does not have anti-slip properties. After application, slip resistance can be achieved with Dryfix Anti-Slip Varnish ISG 6331.

What should be considered during application?

When applying Traffic Paint, pay attention to:

1. Surface preparation,
2. Primer selection,
3. Correct equipment selection such as roller, brush, or machine,
4. Waiting time between coats,
5. Minimum waiting times before opening to traffic.

On which surfaces can it be applied?

Floor paint can be applied on wood, plastic, tiles, ceramic, concrete, asphalt, etc. Procedures before and after painting may vary depending on the floor type.
For tiles and ceramic surfaces, roughening with anti-slip solution is recommended before painting. Primer is recommended for rough surfaces with low adhesion.
