What is Polyurea Waterproofing and How is it Applied?

Polyurea is a two-component system widely used for waterproofing and coating applications. This material is a combination of synthetic polyol and isocyanate hardener. Applied by spraying method, it provides a smooth coating on all types of surfaces. Solvent-free and fast curing is one of the most important features of this waterproofing method.

What is Polyurea Waterproofing?

Polyurea insulation

Polyurea waterproofing is a flexible and high performance coating system. It is used on terraces, roofs, pools, foundations, bridges, tunnels and curtain walls where waterproofing is required. With its high abrasion resistance, corrosion resistance and chemical resistance, it effectively provides waterproofing in the areas where it is used. It also provides long-lasting results.

This material, consisting of a combination of polyol and isocyanate, is a type of polymer. The components polymerize quickly after mixing. It is ready for use in a short time and cures quickly after application.

Polyurea coating is one of the widely preferred options for waterproofing. The reason for this is its properties. Polyurea properties can be listed as follows:

  • Curing time is extremely short. It adheres and cures effectively in a short time after it is applied to the surface. Thus, it ensures the formation of a waterproof layer. Its fast curing provides significant advantages, especially in projects with time limits and projects that need to be completed in a short time.
  • It is a material with enhanced elasticity. Its resistance to structural movements and temperature changes is made possible by its high elasticity. Its flexible structure reduces the risks of splitting and cracking to almost zero.
  • It has high resistance to chemical substances, physical impacts, abrasion and UV rays from the sun. This durability is one of the main reasons why it offers long-lasting waterproofing.
  • It is applied by spraying method. Thus, it creates a seamless coating on the surfaces. There are no points where water can leak or weak points in terms of insulation.
  • It is environmentally friendly as it has a solvent-free structure. It is one of the ideal options for use in confined spaces or at points where human health should be given importance.

For the features and advantages here, the application must be done by professionals. Unprofessional applications will not give the desired result and may cause different problems.

Polyurea has the advantages of fast curing, flexibility, high crack resistance, homogeneous coating and long-lasting performance. Its disadvantage is that its application requires professionalism and special equipment.

Polyurea Coating Advantages

Polyurea floor

Polyurea coating; It is an option that provides precise results in moisture and waterproofing and protects the structure. This completely solid material can be applied by spray thanks to its two-component and fast curing structure. It provides very important advantages in the areas where it is applied. The prominent advantages can be listed as follows:

  • It is prepared and started to be applied in a very short time with its special equipment. It is a type of waterproofing that saves time and work.
  • It closes the cracks on the applied surface and prevents the formation of new ones.
  • It does not allow dampness and moisture-induced problems to arise in the building. It also increases the service life of buildings by preventing corrosion and abrasion.
  • It clearly prevents all leaks coming from ceilings, floors, foundations and walls. In this way, it contributes to the creation of healthy and quality living spaces.
  • Minimizes maintenance needs and costs by protecting structures.
  • It effectively adheres to surfaces and provides insulation even in intense humidity and high temperatures.
  • In architectural structures, it can be applied in thickness suitable for the project without sagging.
  • It fully adheres to the surfaces and does not allow negativities such as flowing.
  • Its fast curing allows it to be applied not only on floors but also on vertical surfaces.
  • It is resistant to fire and is not easily flammable.

Polyurea coating is one of the most preferred options in suitable areas due to these advantages.

Polyurea Waterproofing Usage Areas

Polyurea coating is used in many areas where waterproofing is required due to its properties. It meets expectations in waterproofing with fast curing, flexibility, durability and high adhesion. Thanks to spraying, it can be successfully applied even to the most difficult and narrow areas.

The foundations of buildings are areas that are likely to be directly exposed to moisture in the soil. Protection against moisture and groundwater is essential for the longevity of buildings. Polyurea waterproofing is homogeneously applied to these areas by spraying and does not cause delays in construction thanks to its fast drying time. Its long-lasting structure and durability allows it to fulfill its function for many years without any problems.

Roofs are one of the areas where waterproofing is most critical. Inadequate waterproofing in these areas, which are exposed to precipitation such as rain and snow, causes deterioration and different problems in structures. This material, which is resistant to UV rays and temperatures, responds to waterproofing needs on roofs. Other places where polyurea waterproofing is used can be listed as follows:

  • Floors in industrial areas
  • Water tank, waste water installations, sanitary installations
  • Pools and aquariums
  • Bridge, tunnel and subway constructions
  • Stadiums
  • Underground and surface pipelines
  • Airports
  • Refineries
  • Defense system areas
  • Dilatation areas

Polyurea waterproofing can be applied on different surfaces. It gives successful results on many different surfaces such as concrete, metal, fiberglass and wood.

How is Polyurea Coating Applied?

Polyurea

Certain steps are followed when applying polyurea coating . These points are of great importance for the application to be successful and long-lasting. The steps followed for waterproofing are as follows:

Floor Preparation

As with the use of other waterproofing materials, the preparation of the floors is of great importance here as well. Sandblasting is performed for metal floors and wiping for concrete areas. The floor is ensured to be flat and clean. In this way, the applied material adheres to the surface and gives the desired result.

Protrusions on the surfaces affect the process results. In order to eliminate such negativities, concrete surfaces should be flattened with a smoothing machine. If polyurea is applied without removing these protrusions and gaps, undesirable results such as blistering and cracking will occur over time.

In floor preparation, structural mortars or special alloys are used to soften the sharpness of the floor and prevent the formation of cracks due to structural movements. In addition, depending on the size of the floor, dehumidification chimneys should be placed at appropriate points. Otherwise, water vapor looks for different points for exit and when it cannot find it, it can damage the insulation by swelling the insulation material.

Primer

The primer ensures that the applied material adheres effectively to the surface. It is very important to select the appropriate primer according to the characteristics of the surface and apply it correctly. For example, a two-component epoxy-based primer is preferred for concrete floors. Different options are used on different surfaces.

The amount of use varies according to the preferred primer. However, on average, 300 gr primer per m² is sufficient. After the primer is applied, wait 6 hours for it to dry. Depending on the seasonal conditions, this period can go up to 12 hours. Do not proceed to the application stage before complete drying.

Application

After the cleaning, preparation and priming of the floor is completed, the application phase begins. Polyurea is sprayed onto the floor at the appropriate temperature and pressure using special equipment. With the application, a layer of approximately 2 mm thick is formed on the floor. This layer provides a high level of waterproofing. Polyurea insulation is completed with the curing process.

Polyurea Coating Prices 2024

There are different products to be used for polyurea coating. Prices differ due to product type and quantity. For example Cold plyureais a two-component product. This product has a price of 4,260 TL for 26.5 kg. Pure polyurea is a hot-applied option. The price of this option for 420 kg is 95,000 TL.
