Bitumen Waterproofing Products for Foundations and Concrete Structures
Foundations, retaining walls and other below-ground structures are exposed to moisture from the surrounding soil and, in some projects, hydrostatic water pressure. Bitumen-based waterproofing products help protect concrete and masonry by forming a continuous barrier against water ingress on the side exposed to moisture.
Modern bituminous waterproofing coatings are available as polymer-modified, rubber-modified and polyurethane-modified formulations. Unlike prefabricated sheet membranes, liquid-applied bitumen waterproofing products are spread directly onto a prepared substrate, forming a bonded protective layer as they cure. Their ability to cover irregular surfaces, corners and complex details makes them particularly useful for foundation and basement waterproofing.
The DryFiX range includes single-component liquid bitumen coatings, two-component rubber-modified thick coatings and bitumen-polyurethane liquid membranes. The appropriate product depends on water exposure, substrate conditions, expected movement and whether the completed membrane will be covered or left exposed.
Types of Bitumen-Based Waterproofing Products
Single-Component Bitumen Waterproofing Coatings
Single-component bituminous coatings are generally supplied ready to apply and are suitable for a range of compatible concrete and masonry surfaces.
DryFiX BITUMER 100 is a polymer-modified, elastic bitumen waterproofing coating applied by brush or roller. The product is listed for foundations, retaining walls, exterior basement walls and selected roof and terrace applications.
A properly prepared substrate, adequate drainage and reinforcement at crack-prone details are important for reliable performance.
Two-Component Rubber-Modified Bitumen Coatings
Two-component rubber-modified bitumen products are designed to form thicker waterproofing layers for demanding below-ground applications.
DryFiX BITUMER 100 2K is a flexible, high-build bitumen-rubber coating intended for foundations, retaining walls and other specified structures exposed to seepage water or water pressure.
Its product information cites EN 15814, the standard associated with polymer-modified bituminous thick coatings. The water-pressure conditions, required dry film thickness and protective layers must be established for the project before application.
Bitumen-Polyurethane Liquid Membranes
Bitumen-polyurethane formulations combine bituminous waterproofing properties with the elasticity and adhesion characteristics of polyurethane technology.
DryFiX BITUMER 400 2K is a two-component liquid waterproofing membrane designed for applications including foundations, roofs, balconies beneath coverings and selected bridge-deck or non-potable-water applications.
This product has its own mixing, priming and curing requirements and should not be installed using the instructions for conventional bitumen emulsions.
Torch-applied and self-adhesive bituminous sheet membranes are also used widely in construction, but they are a different product format from the liquid-applied coatings featured in this DryFiX category.
Advantages of Liquid Bitumen Waterproofing
Continuous protection against water ingress: When applied at the specified thickness, liquid bituminous membranes form a continuous protective layer over suitable surfaces, reducing potential gaps at irregular details.
Flexibility and crack-bridging capability: Selected polymer- and rubber-modified formulations can accommodate limited substrate movement and bridge minor cracks within their tested performance limits. They do not replace structural crack repair or proper movement-joint detailing.
Practical application on vertical and horizontal surfaces: Depending on the product, bituminous coatings can be applied with a brush, roller, trowel or approved spray equipment. This makes them suitable for complex foundation geometry and areas where installing sheet membranes would require extensive detailing.
Protection for buried concrete: Below-grade waterproofing helps limit moisture penetration into concrete and can reduce conditions that contribute to reinforcement corrosion and interior dampness.
Cost-conscious project specification: Liquid bitumen coatings can be an economical option for certain applications, particularly when substrate preparation, labour, coverage, curing time and protective layers are considered together. Actual project cost depends on the specified product and installation conditions.
Where Are Bitumen Waterproofing Materials Used?
Foundations, Basement Walls and Retaining Walls
Below-ground waterproofing is one of the principal applications for bitumen-based coatings.
Products are generally applied to the positive-pressure side of the structure—the exterior face that comes into contact with soil moisture or groundwater.
After curing, membranes may require protection boards and drainage layers before backfilling.
Resistance to hydrostatic pressure must be verified for the specific product and design; negative-side waterproofing cannot be assumed.
Roofs and Terraces
Selected bituminous coatings can be used for roof waterproofing, repairs and protected terrace assemblies.
However, most conventional black bitumen coatings should not be treated as permanently UV-resistant exposed finishes.
If the membrane will remain exposed to sunlight, the specified system must include an approved protective finish or a product expressly rated for that exposure.
Balconies and Wet Areas
Some bitumen-based or bitumen-polyurethane products are suitable beneath tiles, screeds or other protective finishes on balconies and in bathrooms.
Compatibility with tile adhesives and the complete floor build-up must be confirmed before installation.
Waterproofing beneath coverings is different from an exposed, pedestrian-traffic-resistant floor finish.
Underground and Infrastructure Projects
Bituminous waterproofing technologies are used in selected below-grade and infrastructure applications, including retaining structures and bridge decks.
Project requirements can include crack movement, water pressure, drainage, loading and compatibility with subsequent construction layers.
Tunnels, dams and other high-demand structures require purpose-designed and verified waterproofing specifications rather than a general-purpose coating selection.
Pipes, Concrete Details and Non-Potable Water Applications
Certain products may be specified for compatible pipe surfaces, roof gutters or concrete details.
DryFiX BITUMER 400 2K also identifies some non-potable-water containment applications.
Drinking-water tanks and other structures with hygiene or permanent-immersion requirements require an expressly approved product; suitability should never be inferred from the term “waterproof.”
How to Apply Bitumen-Based Waterproofing Products
1. Prepare and Repair the Surface
The substrate must be sound, sufficiently even and free from dust, oil, release agents, loose particles and anything that may impair adhesion.
Repair defects, fill voids and form appropriate fillets at wall-to-floor junctions.
Check surface moisture and drainage conditions against the selected product's technical data sheet.
2. Select the Correct Primer
Priming requirements vary between formulations.
For example, BITUMER 100 2K specifies DryFiX PRIM-A bitumen emulsion primer, while BITUMER 100 has its own diluted-product priming procedure.
BITUMER 400 2K specifies different primer options depending on substrate moisture.
These methods are not interchangeable.
3. Apply the Required Coats and Reinforcement
Apply the material using the method approved for the product, maintaining the specified consumption and dry film thickness.
Many liquid bitumen membranes require at least two coats, with the second coat applied only after the appropriate waiting time.
Reinforce corners, junctions, penetrations and crack-prone areas where specified.
Two-component products must be mixed and used within their stated pot life.
4. Cure, Protect and Backfill
Do not expose fresh waterproofing to rain, frost, damage or premature loading.
For buried structures, wait until the membrane has cured before installing approved protection or drainage boards and carrying out backfilling.
Inspect the surface for discontinuities and repair any damaged areas before covering the coating.
Choosing the Right Bitumen Waterproofing Product
Before selecting a liquid bitumen membrane, establish whether the project involves soil dampness, occasional seepage or sustained water pressure.
Then check the approved substrate, application temperature, primer, crack-bridging performance, required thickness, curing time and need for UV or mechanical protection.
BITUMER 100 provides a single-component option for compatible surfaces. BITUMER 100 2K is intended for higher-build rubber-modified waterproofing applications. BITUMER 400 2K serves projects that require a bitumen-polyurethane formulation with its own performance and installation characteristics.
